Less me, more you. Less bluster, more real hands-on training. Let’s create some light!

Learn to Light in Personal, one on one workshops

The Studio in Phoenix is located downtown at the corner of 4th Ave. and VanBuren. There are many hotels in the area, and in the summer they are very affordable.

Featuring a full cyclorama, and plenty of room to shoot, the studio also has doors for bringing in automobiles and motorcycles. We also have a full makeup area with multiple stations, a shower and a private restroom for models. The studio is stocked with most of what we will need to make the images for your portfolio.

Bill Bell writes:
"Don's workshop is absolutely fantastic! I went expecting to gain a deeper understanding of light; how to shape it, how to use different modifiers to good effect, and how to use light to communicate mood. I learned all of that and more. I came away with a much more dimensional understanding that gives me the confidence that I can make the light I need. But that's just the technical stuff.

I also found Don to be a genuine teacher, truly interested in me learning. He was approachable and fun, and went WAY above and beyond to make my 2 days a comfortable and valuable learning experience. His indepth review of my portfolio was icing on the cake! More than worth every penny I spent.

Thanks, Don!"

One on One Advanced Workshops

This workshop is for the serious emerging professional and startup pro looking to become more proficient in specific aspects of studio commercial photography. This is a two full day workshop in my studio space, Phoenix, AZ. Photos of the studio are on the Bio page here.

This is a total immersion workshop in studio techniques and lighting. It is focused on the work that is needed for each photographer. This focus is determined by working with the photographer and his/her portfolio before the workshop dates.

With a personal portfolio review and consultation with the photographer a custom plan is put together to make the two days tightly focused on what we have decided together should be worked on.

The workshop is held in my studio in Phoenix, Arizona. It is off season here due to the incrediblyhotweath... err, warmth, so flight fees and hotel expenses are quite low.

The fee is $1500.

It covers 2 full days of shooting, editing and post production. Lunch both days is also included. (Mexican food normally and a lunch at the Ballpark if there is no game.) We also furnish the Post Production machines needed, so dodn't worry about anything other than your laptop. We shoot tethered in all situations.

Modeling fees are not included. There are two methods of dealing with models:

Agency Models:
Models will be booked from local agencies and can will include all releases for personal promotion. I will help negotiate fees for models/MUA and we will discuss your budget. You will be able to be involved in the hiring of the models/talent. There are several wonderful agencies in the Phoenix area.

Model Mayhem Models:
If you would like to book the talent yourself from online sources such as Model Mayhem, that is fine. Of course I cannot guarantee that they will show up, that will be your call. I will help, but final booking will be with you. I recommend you offer them a little money to make sure they come. I have access to many local models who do indeed show up.

The studio has a full cove, a very large shooting space and enough room to shoot fashion, table tops, motorcycles... 40+ft by 24ft coved at top as well.

We have a full compliment of lights. From strobes to 5K's with Fresnel... everything you need to shoot is there.

Additionally:

  • Portfolio Review
We will look at your work, what you want to do with it, and how you can begin to form a plan for your portfolio work.
  • Marketing Plan
We will design a personal marketing plan for you. Including Social Media, Blogs, Direct Mail, Email and more.
  • Plan for finding clients
Working together we will discover the different markets you can begin to target with your work. Discovering who wants the work you do is the first step of getting your plan going.
  • Shot review for portfolio work
We will make sure the work you do be closely aligned with the portfolio you want to create. I have had some shooters do a lot of work in a weekend shoot.
  • Customized Information
... and specific work that the photographer has identified as being a challenge. Let me know what you need to work on. We will look at your current work, and get a full handle on what to do during this very important time.

To enroll:

Portfolio review is important.
Please have an online portfolio available for us to review over the phone and discuss what you are needing specifically. Contact me by email or phone to set a time for review. They are filling up faster than expected, and I have to leave time for my client work... so limited availablity. We will work to your schedule as best as we can.

This is not a Learn to Light beginner/intermediate workshop, but rather one for emerging and more advanced photographers who are discovering what they are needing to add to their skill set.
